#71 – FRST Series Ultra-High-Precision Bulk Metal Z1-Foil Resistors
The FRST series of wraparound, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) surface-mount chip resistors are designed for high-temperature applications up to +200°C. The devices provide a load-life stability of 0.02% ΔR after 2000 hours of rated power at 175°C, 0.015% typical ΔR after 1000 hours at 85°C/85% relative humidity, and a low TCR of ±2.5 ppm/°C from −55°C to +175°C (25°C ref). The FRST series is optimized for a variety of industrial, alternative energy, resistance temperature detector (RTD), military, aerospace, medical, Li-ion battery charging, down-hole, and oil well applications requiring resistors to have a minimal drift from their initial values when operating above +175°C and in humid environments.
The FRST devices are built on next-generation Z1-Foil technology, for which the main advantage is an increased insensitivity to temperature and humidity changes. A solid monolithic alloy element is matched to the substrate, forming a single interdependent structure with balanced temperature characteristics for an unusually low and predictable TCR and load life stability. Offered in six chip sizes from 0603 to 2512, the FRST series features a wide resistance range from 5 Ω to 125 kΩ, with any resistance value (e.g. 1K2345 vs. 1K) within this range available at any tolerance with no additional cost or lead time effect.
#83 – High-Resistance Miniature Foil Strain Gages
High precision foil strain gages are at the heart of many types of transducers types. VPG’s highresistance miniature foil strain gages open up new transducer design opportunities by combining various sizes with resistance values from the standard 350 Ω up to 20K Ω, at a very tight resistance tolerance. Together with the excellent gage-to-gage matching, this ensures excellent circuit stability with temperature variations and reduction of zero shifts. VPG’s miniature strain gages can be built with standard size grids as well as miniature grids as small as 0.4 mm in length. This enables placement of the miniature strain gage directly over areas of peak surface strain, resulting in higher levels of signal output in comparison to standard strain gages. Together these features give design engineers a greater degree of freedom in their designs and help to ensure better performance, lower power consumption, and higher levels of precision, reliability, and stability.
