New Vishay Foil Resistors Company Demonstration Highlights High Energy Pulse Superiority of Bulk Metal® Foil Resistors as a “Figure Of Merit” for Precision, Stability, and Reliability
MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA — Dec. 05, 2011 — Vishay Precision Group, Inc. (NYSE: VPG) today announced that its Vishay Foil Resistors division (VFR) has unveiled a new video that presents a demonstration of the high energy pulse capabilities of two resistor technologies: thin film and Bulk Metal® Foil. The short video demonstrates how an 80x rated power electrical pulse vaporizes the thin film device, but is easily absorbed by the Foil resistor.
Using a destructive test that determines how a resistor will perform in a worst-case scenario – such as a lightning strike to an airplane or a power surge – the demo video introduced today highlights the inherent robust design and survivability of VPG Bulk Metal Foil resistors. The test circuit used in this demonstration consists of a high-voltage power supply, a knife switch, two small DMMs, a large 3,000 V capacitor, and 10 kΩ 1206-size resistors in both thin film and the Bulk Metal Foil technologies.  The capacitor is charged to 450 V and then discharged through the resistors, subjecting the resistors to a 20 W pulse for 150 ms, or about 80x their rated power.
As a result of the high energy pulse, the thin film resistor is instantly vaporized. The VPG Bulk Metal Foil resistor, however, not only survives, but shows an insignificant change in resistance.  While not all circuits are subject to such high power pulses, the test provides a clear “figure of merit” indicative of Bulk Metal Foil’s ability to withstand the most severe environmental and application stresses with little or no impact on precision, stability or reliability.  The demonstration shows that, in applications requiring unquestioned reliability and survivability, the VPG Bulk Metal Foil resistor is the device of choice.
