Malvern, Pa. — January 18, 2006 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) announces that it has released two new brochures on ultra-high-precision Bulk Metal® foil resistors. One brochure, titled Audio Noise Reduction Through the Use of Bulk Metal ® Foil Resistors, explains how to select resistors for low-noise audio applications. The other brochure, titled High-Precision Bulk Metal ® Foil Resistors for Military and Aerospace Applications, provides technical data on Vishay’s extensive portfolio of foil resistors.
Invented by Dr. Felix Zandman in 1962, Bulk Metal foil resistors were (together with foil resistance strain gages), the first products manufactured and marketed by Vishay. Over the years, as Vishay has grown from the start-up company founded by Dr. Zandman to become one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, Dr. Zandman — now Chairman of the Board, Chief Technical Officer, and Chief Business Development Officer — has spearheaded an ongoing series of improvements to the original Bulk Metal foil resistor product line. These improvements include Z Foil, which provides an absolute temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 0.2 ppm/°C.
Audio Noise Reduction Through the Use of Bulk Metal ® Foil Resistors is designed to help educate circuit design engineers and others who need to select resistors for audio applications. The brochure describes noise generation within the various available types of resistors (foil, wirewound, metal film, and carbon) and quantifies the noise insertion to expect from each type. The brochure explains the two kinds of relevant noise: thermal noise (caused by the random motion of electrons within the resistive conductor) and current noise (the bunching and releasing of electrons associated with current flow). The brochure highlights the fact that signal purity in audio applications can be a function of the selection of resistor technology for pre-amp, amplifier, and volume control applications.
