VPG Video Demos Simulation and Calibration of Thermistor Temperature Measurement With Bulk Metal® Foil Resistors
MALVERN, Pa. — Dec. 16, 2013 — Vishay Precision Group, Inc. (NYSE: VPG) today announced that its Vishay Foil Resistors brand (VFR) has released a new video that illustrates how ultra-stable and accurate Bulk Metal Foil® precision resistors can be used to simulate and calibrate temperature measurements in hyper-sensitive, thermistor-based system circuits.
Thermistors can be used to make extremely sensitive temperature measurements. However, that sensitivity can also be their biggest drawback. Self-heating effects and non-linearity make them extremely difficult to accurately use without proper instrumentation. VFR Bulk Metal Foil resistors are the perfect solution to calibrate and maintain the accuracy of extremely sensitive thermistor-based temperature measurement instruments used in the medical field.
To demonstrate this, the video released today uses a hypothetical case study of a medical researcher working on a project to detect blockages in the human cardiovascular system. The test system utilizes thermistors coupled to an extremely sensitive and accurate resistance bridge that carefully measures the temperature of a simulated circulatory system. The researcher looks for the most minute fluctuations in temperature as the circulatory system's flow is manually disrupted. In the real world, these disruptions could be blockages in an artery or vein.
The sensitivity and accuracy in this simulated system can only be achieved by using VFR resistors as both the reference and calibration resistors in the precision bridge circuit. VFR resistors can exactly duplicate the ohmic value of a thermistor to six digits with tolerances as tight as ±0.001% at the desired temperature. In addition, they offer TCR of less than 0.5 ppm/ᵒC and long-term stability of a few ppm per year. Substituting them into the bridge circuit in place of the thermistor allows the circuit to be balanced and calibrated to ultra-sensitive and ultra-accurate levels.
